Initiatives, which began in 1997, are now bringing significant improvement in attainment at all levels, equipping young people for a bright future:
- two new local primary schools and one high school (now located just outside the area) have been built under the Private Finance Initiative
- the new Sure Start nursery at Melandra has helped Hattersley become the first ‘Children’s Centre’ in Tameside and one of the first in the country. Following the national model, this gives young children the best possible preparation for school.
Hattersley primary schools now show better attainment than the borough average and secondary attainment is also rising dramatically.

Encouragingly, more local young people now enter education, employment or training when they leave school at 16.
In addition, a comprehensive range of local recreational activities are supporting the physical, social and educational development of young people.
