
Actions in this area are wide and goals are often shared with other activity areas to help keep young people healthy, safe and help them reach their potential.
Great strides have been made locally in education but residents, schools and agencies such as Sure Start have also played a wider role with varied and practical support for children and their families. Hattersley also become the first Children's Centre in Tameside and one of the first nationally.
Joined-up working at local level has also helped a range of community-based initiatives. These include:
- Introduction of 'Peer Mentoring' in local Primary Schools
- Increased usage of Cyber Café under Youth Services management
- Delivery of 'Speak Easy' sex education training for parents
- Support for the Introduction of BEST (Behaviour, Education, Support Team)
- Establishment of a Youth Club at the Community Centre - run by local Police
- Support for introduction of groups in Alder & Longdendale schools, dealing with Alcohol & SRE (Sex, Relationships and Education)
- Successful bid to Manchester City FC's 'City in the Community' scheme
- Mainstreaming of the Reading Recovery project in primary schools
- Young people involved in events such as the Greater Manchester Music Action Zone, Youth Xplosion and opening of the Ken Ward Sports Centre
- Targeted youth intervention work by Eden Hattersley, supported by Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership, Police and the Youth Service
