Land Development

The Masterplan for the area shows the location of the proposed development sites in the Hattersley and Mottram area.

The Masterplan was prepared on behalf of Tameside Council and partners in December 2003 and adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance in April 2004.

In consultation with the local community a Development and Delivery Strategy was prepared showing individual development sites, including overarching design principles and plans for improvements to public space.

Outline planning applications were submitted between November 2005 and January 2006 for all residential development sites. These were supported by design statements, which set out the principles and parameters for development.

Progress to date

The original development schedule has suffered delays due to the economic downturn and will be reviewed on an on-going basis in response to the changing economic climate and housing market conditions. Because of this revised schedules will be drawn up accordingly.

However, due to commitment from residents and development partners to deliver the plans for the area, work commenced on the Phase 1 housing development in the Harehill area in March 2010, with the first properties going on sale in July 2011.

The new Tesco superstore and District Centre development is a key part of the Masterplan for the area and will comprise a Tesco Extra and a ‘community hub’ which will provide a base for the library service, Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership, Peak Valley Housing Association, the police, the Community Forum Association and numerous other community groups.

Work on the new development started in July 2011 with the new store expected to open for business in summer 2012.  The new community facilities are likely to be ready at the same time.
