History

Origins
Hattersley is steeped in history, and the name dates back more than 900 years when the area was mainly farmland.

Hattersley was mentioned in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book, (1085-86) a census that recorded English landowners and their property at the time. Local people take great pride in the name and its history.

1960s – 1990s
In the 1960s, Hattersley became the site for a brand new housing estate, built by Manchester City Council to re-house people from the housing clearance areas of east Manchester.

However, 30 years on, a journey round Hattersley revealed an area that had clearly suffered from the changing demand for social housing and a greater investment in local services.

Regeneration in the area since the mid 1990s began a change in fortunes that has now led to a massive investment being secured which will see the area realise its huge potential.

Present Day
Because of this strong neighbourhood based partnership, over the last five years schools have been replaced through the Private Finance Initiative, the borough’s first Sure Start scheme has been introduced and high quality sports facilities have been provided.

Alongside this there has been significant investment and improvement in public services, with the area now one of the cleanest and safest neighbourhoods in Tameside, with top performing primary schools and served by two of the borough’s best high schools; Alder and Longdendale.

The transfer of former Manchester City Council Housing stock to the local Peak Valley Housing Association in September 2006 paved the way for the multi-million pound physical transformation of the area, which between 2007 and 2014 will see:

  • building of around 830 new houses
  • improvement to existing social housing
  • new commercial developments
  • community facilities
  • associated environmental enhancements
